As you are reading this issue of the FCI Newsletter, the summer dog-show season
is at its peak. The biggest event - a feast for all eager exhibitors – of this year
was the FCI World Dog Show 2012 in Salzburg, Austria.
I would like to congratulate the Austrian kennel Club (ÖKV) and everybody who contributed
to this outstanding canine event.
This issue contains a report and evaluation of this show. I would like to point
out that unfortunately, abandoned dogs in closed vehicles at shows are a remaining
issue. The speakers continually encouraged people to come to their vehicles and
take their dogs out, even announcing particular license plate numbers of these vehicles,
asking the owners to release their dogs immediately from the heat. Despite the joint
effort of the police and paramedics, there was one dog who, sadly, didn‘t make it.Unfortunately,
this has been a recurring scenario, even at the most prestigous shows. I am asking
everybody to keep an eye on this problem and to look for ways to deal with it. Dogs
hardly deserve to be treated like that.

Report on the CACIB Show held in Pretoria (South Africa) on Sunday, May 27th, 2012
This event was held as part of the KUSA Classic Week-end in Pretoria, South Africa.
As KUSA is the senior club representing the FCI in this continent, the appellation
of “Africa” was included in the title.
A total of 360 dogs were entered and they were judged by an eminent panel of FCI
judges, namely, Augusto Benedicto Santos III (Philippines), Ricardo Saldahña (Mexico),
Warner Cespedes (Costa Rica), Luis Pinto Teixeira (Portugal), Fabian Daza (Colombia).
The show was held as a full FCI show with all rules and regulations being observed,
including acceptance of all FCI Breed Standards. This format was received well by
the exhibitors and as a result of the support given over the years (which has been
growing year by year) more CACIB shows are being planned to be held in the Republic
of South Africa.
The standard of dogs shown was very high and the judges expressed their approval
of how the show was run and the excellence of the dogs in question.
LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr Werner Cespedes (COSTA RICA), Mrs M Matthys (OWNER), Mr Greg Eva (PRESIDENT, KUSA)
Dog: CH MONTEROUGE FLYING SOLO (STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER)
The venue was at a school ground and had very high quality and we were able to hold
it outside due to the dry Johannesburg winter where the mornings and evenings are
fairly cold (1˚ C) and the day times are sunny with temperatures up to 21˚ C. Being
part of the KUSA Classic, special emphasis was given to attracting the public and
interested parties and the whole week-end proved greatly successful in the promotion
of purebred dogs and of their healthiness.
