As you are reading this issue of the FCI Newsletter, the summer dog-show season is at its peak. The biggest event - a feast for all eager exhibitors – of this year was the FCI World Dog Show 2012 in Salzburg, Austria.
I would like to congratulate the Austrian kennel Club (ÖKV) and everybody who contributed to this outstanding canine event.

This issue contains a report and evaluation of this show. I would like to point out that unfortunately, abandoned dogs in closed vehicles at shows are a remaining issue. The speakers continually encouraged people to come to their vehicles and take their dogs out, even announcing particular license plate numbers of these vehicles, asking the owners to release their dogs immediately from the heat. Despite the joint effort of the police and paramedics, there was one dog who, sadly, didn‘t make it.Unfortunately, this has been a recurring scenario, even at the most prestigous shows. I am asking everybody to keep an eye on this problem and to look for ways to deal with it. Dogs hardly deserve to be treated like that.

Shenyang (CN) 12-13/5/2012: Our Steps Never Stop Moving Forward

2012 CKU NC All-Breed Championship Show (CACIB) and 2012 CKU Shenyang All-Breed Championship Show (CAC) were held in Shenyang on 12 and 13 May, 2012 in Tiexi Stadium of Shenyang city. The CKU invited two FCI all-breed judges for the show, one is Mr Locodi Zsolt from Romania and the other is Mr Zlatko Kraljic from Croatia. For both of them, this was not their first time in China, so the exhibitors were no strangers to both judges.

The CKU was founded six years ago. It has received great support and help from all over the world on the path of its development. Most of our helpers are the judges we invite for dog shows. The CKU learns in this fast and simple way, which is also the key for a better and better development.

Shenyang is located in Liaoning Province, which is in the northeast of China. It is one of the four most important areas of the Chinese canine development. Each CKU Shenyang show has always been supported by many members, just as this year’s. 2012 Shenyang show's entry was nearly 400 and part of them could reflect the developing trend of Chinese canine career. Regarding the local favourite, big-size breeds are welcome, such as Caucasian Shepherd Dog, Dogo Argentino, Cane Corso Italiano, Dogo Canario. Besides, competitions in Golden Retriever, Border Collie, Labrador Retriever were also very fierce, these being popular breeds in China. On the other hand, as the result of grooming development under CKU's promotion around these years, breeds like Poodle, Bichon Frise are also flourishing and took a big part of the show entry. Because of the upgrade of the dogs' quality, competition in group 9 is always the most fierce and fascinating.

Mr Zlatko Kraljic accepted our interview after the show and he expressed his opinion of the show. He said: "Regarding the show organisation, I must say that it has been very well organised in all the details - spotless. Rings have been very well marked and very large, competition schedule was very well defined and therefore there wasn't any crowd in ring entrance. Special congratulations for their very correct behaviour in the ring towards judges and other handlers in competition. That leaves very good impression with judges and spectators. It is obvious that some breeds - because of their popularity in China - had larger number in the show, for example: Border Collie, Labrador and Golden Retriever and Poodles. In some breeds, I noticed the high quality of some dogs, which is a result of the good and hard work of your breeders. In breeds like Golden Retriever and especially in Zwergschnauzer, the impact of American types in Chinese dog breeding noticeable".

In China, the American impact has indeed existed for many years in some breeds. However, the CKU is doing its best to revise people's concept of the FCI standards and has been successful in Dobermann and Rottweiler's development: there is no American type of both these breeds in CKU shows. As far as Chow Chow, Siberian Husky and other breeds in China are concerned, even many judges from Europe gave credit that some of the dogs could even win in Europe. The CKU has been progressing forward, step by step, towards the FCI standards and there still is a long way to go.
